About This Opportunity

Chess.com is hiring a remote Director of Recruiting & Candidate Experience to lead and scale its global talent acquisition strategy across a fully distributed organization.

This role combines recruiting leadership, operational strategy, employer branding, recruiting analytics, and hands-on hiring execution to ensure Chess.com continues attracting world-class talent across tech, gaming, product, content, and business functions.

The ideal candidate is both strategic and execution-focused, capable of building scalable recruiting systems while maintaining an exceptional candidate experience.

You will partner closely with executives, hiring managers, and People Operations teams to shape long-term hiring strategies, improve recruiting infrastructure, and strengthen employer branding globally.

This is a high-impact leadership role for someone passionate about building modern recruiting organizations in fast-paced remote environments while supporting a mission-driven gaming and technology company.

What You Will Do

• Recruiting Leadership & Talent Strategy
  Lead recruiting operations across a globally distributed remote organization
  Design and execute long-term talent acquisition strategies aligned with business growth goals
  Own company-wide hiring outcomes balancing speed, quality, and long-term talent health
  Scale and mentor a high-performing recruiting team and leadership structure
  Lead critical and executive-level hiring searches when needed
  Partner with company leaders on workforce planning, role design, and hiring strategies 
• Candidate Experience & Recruiting Operations
  Improve and optimize the full recruitment lifecycle from sourcing through onboarding
  Ensure all candidates receive a positive, respectful, and transparent hiring experience
  Build scalable recruiting infrastructure and hiring workflows
  Collaborate with People Operations to improve onboarding and hiring processes
  Standardize recruiting operations and assessment practices across teams 
• Analytics & Process Improvement
  Use recruiting analytics and market data to improve hiring performance and strategy
  Build data-driven insights and reporting systems for leadership teams
  Track recruiting KPIs, funnel performance, and hiring efficiency metrics
  Continuously refine hiring practices, sourcing strategies, and talent pipelines
  Stay updated on recruiting technologies, market trends, and modern hiring practices 
• Employer Branding & Talent Attraction
  Partner with Marketing and Communications teams to strengthen employer branding
  Position Chess.com as a leading employer within gaming and technology industries
  Expand talent reach through innovative sourcing and community engagement strategies
  Improve hiring frameworks to support fair and consistent candidate evaluation 
• Leadership & Collaboration
  Work closely with executives, department leaders, and People Business Partners
  Educate teams on interviewing best practices and modern talent acquisition strategies
  Build scalable recruiting processes for globally distributed teams
  Support strategic hiring decisions across engineering, product, gaming, and content teams

What They’re Looking For

• Requirements:
  10+ years of experience in talent acquisition or recruiting
  At least 4 years leading recruiting teams and shaping recruiting strategy
  Experience hiring for remote and globally distributed organizations
  Strong background recruiting within tech, gaming, or digital product companies
  Experience hiring specialized roles such as software engineering and product management
  Deep knowledge of ATS systems, sourcing platforms, and recruiting technologies
  Strong analytical skills with experience using recruiting metrics and hiring analytics
  Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  Experience designing equitable and scalable hiring practices
  Strong understanding of remote hiring and global recruiting operations
  Passion for gaming, technology, or the Chess.com mission 
• Preferred Qualifications:
  Experience building employer brands and recruiting marketing initiatives
  Existing network within gaming, tech, or engineering communities
  Experience with global scaling or multi-region recruiting operations
  Familiarity with Tableau, Looker, advanced Excel, or recruiting dashboards
  Experience sourcing through GitHub, Discord, gaming communities, or niche platforms
  Background in fast-growing startups or founder-led organizations
  Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (preferred but not required)
