What You Will Do

• Build and improve products across the Automattic ecosystem (WordPress, WooCommerce, Tumblr, etc.)
• Develop scalable systems used by millions of users worldwide
• Contribute to AI-powered features and modern development workflows
• Write clean, maintainable code with frequent deployments
• Collaborate with a global team through code reviews and async communication
• Debug complex issues and optimize performance
• Contribute to open-source projects and shared tools
• Continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and challenges

Requirements

• Strong experience with multiple programming languages and frameworks
• Willingness to work with PHP and JavaScript (core languages at Automattic)
• Experience building and maintaining systems at scale
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
• Understanding of system architecture and abstraction layers
• Attention to detail and focus on code quality
• Ability to work independently in a distributed, remote environment
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Availability to travel 3–4 weeks per year for team meetups
• Nice to have
  Experience with open-source contributions
  Background in high-scale backend systems or large user platforms
  Familiarity with modern AI tools in development workflows

What You Get

• $70,000 – $170,000 USD (paid in local currency globally)
