Chess.com is looking for a highly skilled remote Database Engineer to help scale and optimize the infrastructure powering one of the world’s largest gaming platforms.

Supporting millions of daily chess games, user interactions, puzzles, and social network activities, this role focuses on designing resilient, high-performance database systems and improving automation, tooling, and scalability across hybrid cloud and bare-metal environments.

You’ll work on large-scale distributed systems, real-time gaming workloads, database architecture, data pipelines, observability tooling, and infrastructure automation while collaborating closely with engineering teams across the platform.

This is a full-time, 100% remote opportunity open worldwide.

What You Will Do as a Product Designer

• Design scalable database systems optimized for real-time gaming and social network workloads
• Build automation tools for database deployment, migrations, and operations
• Develop data pipelines and ETL workflows for analytics and machine learning features
• Engineer multi-region database architectures with low latency and high availability
• Solve complex data modeling challenges for chess games, puzzles, and social features
• Improve database infrastructure using modern storage engines and architectural patterns
• Build observability and performance monitoring tools
• Collaborate with engineering teams on schema design and database integrations
• Implement Infrastructure-as-Code practices for provisioning and lifecycle management
• Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to incident response and postmortems

What They’re Looking For

• 5+ years of professional Database Engineering experience
• Expert-level MySQL/Percona knowledge
• Strong Python and/or Go programming skills
• Experience building data pipelines and distributed systems
• Strong Redis experience for caching and pub/sub systems
• Advanced Linux systems knowledge
• Experience with Terraform, Ansible, Pulumi, or similar IaC tools
• Strong understanding of query optimization, indexing, and workload analysis
• Experience with monitoring and observability platforms like Datadog or Prometheus
• Nice to Have
  Gaming industry or real-time platform experience
  Deep MySQL internals expertise
  Experience with ProxySQL, Vitess, or database middleware solutions
  Knowledge of MySQL sharding and partitioning
  Experience with ScyllaDB or Cassandra
  Kubernetes and container orchestration experience
  Cloud database experience with AWS or GCP
  Open-source contributions to database ecosystem tools
