About This Opportunity

Pearson is hiring a Senior Software Engineer (Advanced Specialist, IC25) to work on high-impact full-stack systems within its education technology ecosystem.

This is a pure individual contributor role (no management), focused on designing, building, and optimizing scalable software systems that support Pearson’s core digital platforms.

You’ll act as a technical authority and mentor, helping shape architecture decisions, improve code quality, and drive engineering excellence across teams.

What You’ll Be Doing

• System Design & Development
  Design and build scalable full-stack solutions
  Apply engineering best practices (SOLID, Clean Code, DDD, BDD)
  Develop and maintain complex software systems across domains
• Technical Leadership (IC role)
  Guide engineers on architecture and design decisions
  Lead code reviews and improve code quality standards
  Mentor peers and promote engineering best practices
  Help reduce technical debt and improve delivery efficiency
• AI & Innovation
  Actively use and promote AI tools in development workflows
  Improve automation in coding, testing, and observability
  Stay current with emerging technologies and apply them
• Collaboration & Delivery
  Work closely with Product and QA teams
  Translate user needs into technical solutions
  Balance trade-offs between performance, scalability, and technical debt
  Ensure proper documentation and technical clarity

Requirements

• Technical Skills
  Strong expertise in Java (main language)
  Experience with React and Kotlin
  Deep understanding of OOP principles
  Spring / Spring Boot frameworks
  Git, Maven, Gradle
  Microservices architecture
  Docker + Kubernetes
  Cloud platforms (AWS / Azure / GCP)
  CI/CD pipelines (GitHub workflows preferred)
  Observability tools (e.g., New Relic)
  Databases (MongoDB or similar)
• Experience
  6+ years in software engineering
  Proven progression in technical responsibility
  Strong experience in Agile environments
  Hands-on experience in full SDLC
• Soft Skills
  Strong problem-solving ability
  Clear communication and collaboration skills
  Ability to work independently and in teams
  High attention to code quality and system design
