Remote Senior Product Engineer – Payments Team Contract Full Time NEW

About This Opportunity

WeTravel is looking for a remote Senior Product Engineer to join its Payments team and lead complex, high-impact projects across payment collection, disbursement, foreign exchange, reconciliation, and card issuing.

You will work closely with Product and Payments Operations teams to take projects from discovery and technical design through development, rollout, monitoring, and incident response.

This is a highly technical role for someone with deep payments engineering experience who is comfortable owning mission-critical financial systems.

What You Will Be Doing

Lead payment projects from discovery through production.
Design and integrate solutions with payment service providers and payment networks.
Build and expand support for local payment methods such as UPI, PIX, and account-to-account payments.
Contribute to a new card issuing platform, including ledgers, authorization flows, controls, and operational tooling.
Improve the reliability and scalability of payment processing systems.
Work on multi-currency and foreign exchange functionality across 20+ currencies.
Design reliable systems for reconciliation, money movement, webhooks, and transaction processing.
Partner closely with Product and Payments Operations to understand customer problems and build effective solutions.
Participate in production on-call, incident response, and post-mortems.
Contribute to engineering standards, technical decision-making, and team development.
Help teammates adopt AI tools and modern AI-assisted development practices.

What We’re Looking For
7+ years of product engineering experience.
4+ years working specifically with complex payments systems.
Experience working within a PSP, acquirer, payment gateway, or high-scale payments platform.

Strong practical knowledge of:

Payment integrations and payment rails
Settlement and reconciliation
Dispute management
3DS2
Webhooks
PCI compliance
Tokenization
Money movement
Strong backend development experience in Ruby/Rails, Kotlin, Python, Go, Java, or Node.js.
Ability to work across the full stack, including React.
Experience designing distributed systems involving:
Double-entry ledgers
Reconciliation pipelines
State machines
Idempotency
Event-driven architecture
Reliable consumers
Production on-call and incident-response experience.
Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Comfortable working independently in a distributed, multicultural environment.
Experience with cloud infrastructure, containers, and CI/CD.
Ability to work directly with FX and multi-currency logic.
Practical experience using AI tools in software development.

Nice to Have

Experience launching a new payment method or PSP integration end-to-end.
Card issuing experience, including BIN sponsorship and processor integrations.
Experience with marketplace or two-sided platform payments.
Experience with split payments, payouts, or escrow-like payment flows.
This May Not Be the Right Role If…

This position requires deep payments expertise, not simply experience integrating something like Stripe Checkout.

You may not be a fit if you:

Have only worked with high-level payment integrations.
Don’t want to take ownership of mission-critical financial systems.
Don’t want to participate in on-call and incident response.
Prefer only building new systems rather than scaling and improving existing ones.
Prefer working independently without close collaboration with Product and other teams.
Need a completely predefined roadmap rather than helping shape technical direction.
