Automattic is looking for an Applied AI Engineer to build and scale AI-powered features across its global product ecosystem, including WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, Beeper, and more.
This is a high-impact role focused on shipping real, user-facing AI products used by millions.
You’ll work on everything from prototyping new ideas to scaling production systems, collaborating with distributed teams or in-person in NYC.

What You Will Do
- Build and ship AI-powered features across multiple Automattic products
- Rapidly prototype and scale AI solutions from idea to production
- Develop user-facing AI experiences (site builders, ecommerce, messaging, etc.)
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers globally
- Experiment with new AI capabilities and apply them to real use cases
- Contribute across the stack (frontend, backend, integrations)
- Stay up to date with emerging AI technologies and trends
Requirements
- Proven experience shipping AI features in production (LLMs, AI products)
- Strong full-stack engineering skills (React, TypeScript, PHP or similar)
- Experience building scalable, user-facing AI systems
- Product-focused mindset with strong attention to user experience
- Ability to work in fast-paced, distributed teams
- Strong problem-solving and execution skills
- Nice to have
Experience building consumer AI products at scale
Familiarity with WordPress, ecommerce, or messaging platforms
Open-source contributions
Startup or early-stage experience
Based in NYC or open to relocation
What You Get
- $70,000 – $170,000 USD (paid in local currency globally)
